John 1:14-18: Seeing Immanuel's Glory

December 24, 2023 | Pastor Jon MacDonald
Passage: John 1:14-18

In the fourth gospel, the Apostle John proves that Jesus Christ is unlike any person who ever lived; he is both fully human and fully divine. He “became flesh and dwelt among us” (fully human, John 1:14), and he is the eternal “Word” who has existed with God the Father from eternity past and created all things (fully divine, 1:1-3). Jesus, the God-man, is the only begotten Son, who came to show God’s love. (3:16)

John concludes his introduction (John 1:1-18) to his biography of Jesus with a crucial statement: “We have seen his glory.” We will invest time today in answering this question of Christmas: “What precisely is his glory?” and again, “Have we seen it?”

We know that we have received grace and truth when we see . . .

  1. That Jesus is the Word. (1:1, 14, 17)
  2. That the Word became flesh. (1:14, 15, 16 & 18)
  3. His glory. (1:14, 18)
